PRO SPORTS BACKBOARDS / SPINEBOARDS 

 

        As the EMS care in pro sports becomes more mainstream and customized, we need to start looking at all aspects of the equipment we are using. In doing this the first piece of equipment that comes to mind and one that is seen 99% of the time during the course of any on ice, on field, or on court EMS scenario is the EMS backboard. Think about this; the standard backboard is 72 inches long, "6 feet". How many athletes at the high school, college, and pro levels are 6 feet tall or less? One could say it's easily less than 50%, most likely it's closer to 15%. If that's truly the case we should be using a backboard that fits the need of our athletes. We need a longer, heavy duty, lightweight backboard made especially for the athletes we are caring for. We need a pro sports EMS designed piece of equipment.

           At the most recent Professional Hockey Athletic Trainers Society (PHATS) meeting in Florida, we had the opportunity to train with a new Pro Sports backboard. Many thanks to the NHL's Florida Panthers who provided their state of the art training facility as the location to go through some on ice EMS scenarios with the PHATS ATC's. During the EMS training session pro level ATC's had the ability to work on the ice with this new XL backboard, and the reviews from the training were outstanding. I must say it was really nice to have the ability to use a backboard that had been customized for athletes, and was so light weight. In addition the adjuncts that had been customized for the board to secure the head and legs properly were a hit as well. All in all it proved to be a great system for quick total body stabilization.
